People love thinking "What if ..." questions, so I thought I'd post this thread concerning those questions about Dwight's film career.
I'll start. What if Bernard Jukes was chosen to play Renfield instead of Dwight?

I don't know what the fate of Dracula would have been because I have no idea how effective Jukes was as an actor, even though he had played Renfield in London's West End and Broadway.
I guess, Dwight would not have been typecast in horror, but would we be talking about him now if he hadn't been cast in Dracula? It was a massive box office hit and according to "Buddy" it did bring him to the attention of producers in Hollywood, though they obviously didn't know what to do with him other than cast him in more horrors.
If Hollywood didn't know what to do with him after a huge hit, I wonder what they would have done with him without Dracula? He could have worked for in Hollywood for a few years and maybe something would have happened or if absolutely nothing was biting, he probably would have gone back to New York for good.

I agree with you, Mrs. V., perhaps Dwight would have gone back to Broadway if Hollywood had nothing promising. Maybe he would have gone back and had an even more successful career, indeed becoming the "next John Barrymore". But like you said, would we be talking about him now?

Let's try another one.
"What if Dwight was supposed to play Fritz as a mute?"
When Robert Florey was being considered as the director for Frankenstein, he planned on having the character of Fritz as a mute.

Oh right, are we all supposed to answer a question then suggest a "What if"? My internet etiquette is quite poor and I'm quite old, so apologies.
OK.
What if... the Wall Street Crash had never happened and the Frye's didn't lose their tea room?

Okay...what if Dwight had actually accepted the role of Alexander Hamilton from The Patriots? What if he had been able to transfer from Douglas to a company in NY, so he could still do his patriotic duty while fulfilling a patriotic role?

I was just suggesting coming up with different "What if ..." questions. Answering them is up to anyone's discretion.
Dwight and his wife had a tea room?
I got another one. "What if Buddy had kids or living relatives?"

My humble opinion is that the tea room would have been pretty successful, given the clientele that frequented it. Between that and their Broadway careers, Dwight and Laura's future would certainly have been a brighter one.

"What if Buddy had kids or living relatives?" They sure did, I believe it was on 44 W 96th St., not far from their apt. Dwight's mother Ella helped them run it. Buddy lived on the top floor many years later, and found out about the tea room. How neat would that have been, if Buddy had kids? I imagine they would have also attended conventions honoring Dwight, and would have been pretty proud of both Dwight and Laura, as she too had quite the successful career .

Which reminds me. Did she ever appear in any of Dwight's films as like a cameo maybe? I know Buddy did with The Man Who Found Himself.

Laura did appear on stage with Dwight when Buddy was little, then after that she devoted herself to family life. It would have been wonderful to have heard her voice.

Are there any good photos of Laura? I can't really find any.
Try this one. "What if Dwight was cast in the movie Freaks?"
