Gable was an underrated actor, imho.

I agree Woofy. When I was younger I never saw the appeal of Gable, but these days I like his calm, tongue and cheek approach and even when something tragic happens he could still move me without doing much.

I think Gable came into his full maturity with San Francisco. It might have been the influence of Spencer Tracy or it might have been that practice made perfect. Sure, Clark was good in movies like Red Dust, but I think his best work began around the late 30s and continued to his death. And his last role in The Misfits might have represented the best work of his career.

Saw IT HAPPENED ONE NIGHT last night in film class. Funny film and Gable was great. I read Frank Capra's autobiography last years and he has a lot of interesting things to say about that film. It was so plagued with problems at one point that he told Harry Cohn that Columbia should drop the whole thing. But Cohn insisted so the director soldiered on. The entire production crew and cast just sailed through the filming, with just one take dedicated to most shots. The result was a film that seemed very "natural" and "unforced" by the standards of the time. It's a great film, imho.
