Two things I didn't know and just found out from Robert Osborne: 1) Gene had a high fever and was as sick as a dog during the three day shoot of the "Singin' In The Rain" segment and 2) the "Broadway Melody" segment was supposed to have been performed by Donald O'Connor but he got tied up in some other obligations and Gene took his place.

Interesting Woofy. As Donald O' Connor was just as talented a dancer, it would have been good to see how it would have been good to see how The Broadway Melody part would have turned out if he had been given the opportunity.
I spent ages scanning these photos from a BFI book about Singing In The Rain that I got from the library. I don't know much about Gene Kelly, so I probably should make the effort to read about him/

Hi Woofy, it's nice to meet you. Thank you for sharing that information. I didn't know Gene Kelly was sick during filming, he was magnificent. These photos are really beautiful, Mrs V, thank you so much for scanning them and sharing them with us.

Gene did indeed have a 103-degree fever during the SITR sequence shoot. As for Donald, the reason he didn't perform the Broadway Melody is because I believe he was doing some work with Francis the mule (according to the commentary on the SITR DVD).

About 99% of the information I get about old movies these days comes from TCM and its hosts Robert Osborne and Ben Mankiewicz.

That's a great injustice, imo. They'd have been better off shooting the mule and letting Donald dance. The only thing I'm grateful to Francis for is that he inspired Mr. Ed.

I still have yet to see the Francis films. Someone uploaded a lot, if not all, of Donald's films to Youtube and I've been too lazy to watch them. :/
