I felt there was a shocking lack of women discussed on this board, so I decided to start a thread based on Thelma Ritter. Plus I was watching Rear Window yesterday afternoon and as I think she is the best one in it and was also probably one of the best character actresses to never win the best Supporting Actress Academy Award (despite being nominated six times) I thought she deserved a thread.

Thelma made the transition from stage to film (Miracle On 34th Street) when she was 45 years old. This kind of pigeon-holed her into character parts. Still, she did manage to eat up the scenery and steal the scene from anyone she worked with. I love Jimmy Stewart, but I thought he was miscast in Rear Window and despite the pretty window dressing of my fellow Philadelphian Grace Kelly, the persons I remember most from that film are Raymond "Perry Mason" Burr and Thelma Ritter--two notorious scene stealers.
