I thought I would put these two in the same thread since I love both and I don't want to spam by creating multiple threads.
First off, a bit of a backstory:
My senior year of high school, my British Literature class read Great Expectations by Charles Dickens. Though it was long, I absolutely fell in love with Pip's rags-to-riches story.
When we finished the book, we watched the 1998 "retelling" of the book, which I found absolutely stupid. Disgusted, I researched the 1946 version online and decided to order the movie from Best Buy.
Here it is:
In short, I loved it. John Mills is terrific as the grown-up Pip and Alec Guinness (whom you might recognize from Star Wars) is amazing as the grown-up Herbert.
This is my favorite book and movie of all time besides One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest[/u]. I think John and Alec are terrific and they've worked together in a few other movies. I've seen some more of their solo films. Mills in Hobson's Choice is awesome, and Guinness in Kind Hearts and Coronets is also pretty awesome.

I love both John Mills and Alec Guinness and IMHO did their best work away from Hollywood. The original, The Ladykillers is one of my all time favourite movies and Guinness was wonderful in all his collaborations with David Lean though I believe the two didn't get on. By the time A Passage to India was made, they communicated via a third party.
My favourite John Mills films are Hobson's Choice and Ice Cold in Alex. Also like The Family Way with his daughter Hayley and a really nice soundtrack by Paul McCartney. I mentioned Whistle Down The Wind recently which also starred Hayley but was also written by his beloved wife.
The opening of David Lean's Great Expectations is stunning, so atmospheric and I also liked the portaryals of Estella by the young Jean Simmons and Valerie Hobson. I believe this is by far the best version of the book, as his Lean's adaptation of Oliver Twist.
BTW create as many threads as you like.

lol, thanks, Mrs. V. I agree, this is the best version. It does leave a few things out, such as the death of Orlick and writing off Mrs. Joe's death as sickness, and as an English major I hate that, but I agree that this the best retelling. And I agree, the opening on the marshes and Estella's portrayals are fantastic. There's been a lot of argument that John Mills was too old to play Pip, but I think he did just fine.

Classic film always manages to capture the magic of classic literature better than any modern version ever could in my honest opinion. This isn't to say that a modern version CAN'T be good, it's just that they don't tend to be very often. This is an excellent fandom choice in my opinion, they are both amazing actors and this film is wonderful.
BTW Mrs. V- I agree about "The family way". I saw that film for the first time when I was twelve years old, and even as young as I was, it made a huge impression.

It looked great, but I agree, Miss Havisham is a bit young.
