Alexander Granach

My reply in the Shadow of the Vampire thread reminded me to start a topic about this guy. You all might know him as Knock from Nosferatu.

I'm a big Granach fan and, like Dwight, Granach died very young, in his 50s in 1945.

Here's a video clip of him and his second wife. Sorry, it's in German, which I don't speak and I don't know if any of you guys speak it but it's the best I could find with pictures of Granach, his wife Lotte, and their son, Gad. It also has excerpts from his autobiography, My Life As an Actor:

Thanks for the information Liz! I always liked him in Nosferatu as well, and I wondered what other work he may have done.

I'm afraid I didn't know anything about Granach before this and YES he looks a lot better than he did in Nosferatu. Knock's a bit too creepy for my tastes, but Granach as himself is ok I have to say I think I find Knock generally more sinister than Renfield but then again there's this sinister under current in Nosferatu which is lacking in Dracula.

Also I see he was in Hangmen Must Die with Dwightie

I'll DEFINATELY check out more of his stuff.

I agree, Mrs. V. Knock is very creepy indeed, but Granach himself is not too bad-looking!

Well this is mainly for Liz but I thought I would post it anyway. I was recently thumbing through Peter Lorre's biography and I found this photo of Alexander Granach, when he worked with Peter in Brecht's Mann ist Mann.

Great pic, Mrs. V.! Thanks! Which one is Alex? I have a hard time recognizing him here...is he the man in the left or the middle? I don't remember Granach being that short...

Alex is on the left. Peter Lorre is in the middle,yes he was quite short though he looks shorter here because the other two are on stilts.

There he is, the man of my dreams. Just look at Peter's little tummy.

Peter was quite small, he still had several inches on me though - I'm a teeny 5 foot nothing! ;D


Thanks Mrs V, I didn't even realise that was Alex in Hangmen also die! He was great in Nosferatu, very effective.
