Today's Photoplay covers include: Oct. 1927 (Dolores Costello) Apr. 1928 (Esther Ralston) Aug. 1928 (Billie Dove) Nov. 1928 (Corrinne Griffith) All are named on the cover except for Ms. Costello. Dolores was the daughter of thespian Maurice Costello, the wife of John Barrymore, the mother of John Drew Barrymore and the grandmother of Drew Barrymore. Funnily enough, I was reading about Dolores Costello recently. I knew she was in The Magnificent Ambersons but had no idea of the Barrymore connection until recently. I can see a slight resemblance with her Grand-daughter actually.

Today's post: Dec. 1928 - Janet Gaynor Jan. 1929 - Madge Bellamy Feb. 1929 - Estelle Taylor Mar. 1929 - Marion Davies I like these covers. Especially the first, jolly festival image and complete with the cover story "Exposing Ocult Hocus Pocus In Hollywood"... that's dark! Actually all the cover stories, seem to imply the content inside will show the real, grittier side to Lala land, when I would have thought (in this period) Movie Mags would try to push the fictitious glamorous image or is the content merely sensationalist gossip?

No, Photoplay and Allure were pretty tame, even by the standards of the day. The really bad stuff came a few years later (e.g. Confidential). I like how some of the covers say that they are "color tests" for fashion/beauty purposes. Jeez!

The hand on face pose seems to have been very popular back then.

The hand on face pose seems to have been very popular back then. Yes, Joan's head seems about to fall over into the Black Hole of Calcutta without that supporting hand to protect her.

Has anyone noticed that about 80% of the actresses pictured on the cover of Photoplay have blue eyes? (I have blue eyes, but I've yet to be asked to appear on any magazine covers...)

I like the look on Ina Claire and Mary Astor's faces. Ina seems to say "Do I look silly as a floating head?", while Mary says "I feel so light and carefree!" Seriously though, these are gorgeous covers. I especially love the one of Barbara Stanwyck, so fresh-faced and beautiful

Seriously though, these are gorgeous covers. I especially love the one of Barbara Stanwyck, so fresh-faced and beautiful I also wonder whether the actors had final approval on the covers... Ruby Stevens is my all-time favorite actress. It's amazing how different the young "Barbara" looks from the middle-aged version. I guess that's what Hollywood makeup artists can do for (or against?) you.
