Thanks for the share. I love Vintage Movie Mags. Back in the 90's I collected some British ones from the 1940's/ 50's, but the store I got them from closed down, putting an end to that. The earlier magazines, especially from America, always look so bright and vibrant. I'm looking forward to seeing the rest of your collection.

Thanks, once again for these Woofy. I'm specifically interested in the Pauline Frederick cover. I've only ever seen her as older woman. I know she was in Thank you, Mr Moto. She was also good friends with Dwight Frye and his family, leaving them an antique mahjong table in her will.

Yet another beautiful set of images Woofy. Thanks so much for sharing them. I have to admit I do not know all of them, but still a wonderful selection. What year is the Norma Shearer cover from? She seems to have hardly aged throughout the 1920's and 30's.

She seems to have hardly aged throughout the 1920's and 30's. The Shearer cover was from May, 1925. She would have been 22 years old at the time (three months short of 23).

Most of the actresses on the Photoplay covers are named, but a few aren't. The final two actresses depicted in my last post are Mary Bryan (Jun. 1927) and Olive Borden (Aug. 1927). I'll try to remember to give the names when they're not on the covers themselves.

Thanks for posting the link, Woofy. I don't think anyone here would be offended, but probaords get their knickers in a twist about anything that even hints at the risqué. These are very interesting, tasteful, but I dare say shocking in their day. Is this before Shearer became a big star?

Thanks for posting the link, Woofy. I don't think anyone here would be offended, but probaords get their knickers in a twist about anything that even hints at the risqué. These are very interesting, tasteful, but I dare say shocking in their day. Is this before Shearer became a big star? The Johnston photos were from 1925 (the same year as the Photoplay cover), so Norma was pretty well known by then. She'd been in films since she was 17 years old (1919) and received her first billing in 1922. It wasn't that unusual for actresses to pose (tastefully) nude during the 20s. There are famous nudes of Laura La Plante and Barbara Stanwyck (and many others) from around the same time. With the advent of "the scandals" (LaMarr, Reid, Desmond Taylor, Arbuckle, et al.) the studio began to crack down on such things. You won't find many nudes of famous actors/actresses dated after the late 1920s. And by the mid-1930s the odious "Production Code" was in full-swing. The images "the dream factories" created for their stars came prepackaged after that.

Today's Photoplay covers include: Oct. 1927 (Dolores Costello) Apr. 1928 (Esther Ralston) Aug. 1928 (Billie Dove) Nov. 1928 (Corrinne Griffith) All are named on the cover except for Ms. Costello. Dolores was the daughter of thespian Maurice Costello, the wife of John Barrymore, the mother of John Drew Barrymore and the grandmother of Drew Barrymore.
