Our very first "Star of the Month" is Phillips Holmes as suggested by Monk's Moll.

Nice choice, MM! He was great in Dinner at eight (1933) and of course Man to man.

Interesting choice for star of the month. Very handsome, very personable. Killed at age 35 in a wartime accident. I wonder how big he could have gotten if he had survived.

It's hard to say what would have happened if he had survived. From the few things I have seen him in Phillips seems to have been mostly cast as characters that exude an almost boyish innocence and it seemed to fit quite nicely at the start of the Thirties, but then as the decade wore on cinema changed and leading men were often more hard or witty and that trend seemed to continue into and beyond WW2.
Then again age might have hardened him and he could have graduated into grittier leading parts. I can't think of many leading men that happened to. I guess Dick Powell made the transition from the all American musicals to early film noir and William Holden went from the boy-next-door to the more cynical, macho type.

Thank you, Mrs. V., and thank you Violet ! He was a wonderful actor, I loved him in Chatterbox with Anne Shirley, Lucille Ball and Margaret Hamilton . I agree, Mrs. V., I think he would have done well in detective movies. And as today is his birthday...Happy Birthday, Phillips ! I once visited his resting place, his brother Ralph is also there.

My favorite film with Phillips Holmes is Broken Lullaby(1932). Unfortunately as probably all his movies this one is forgotten by modern audience.

Someone wrote this very nice entry about Phillips on the TCM website. I am floored by what Douglas Fairbank Jr wrote about him. If that's true, I take my hat off to him. Seriously need to check out more of his films now. heckyeahphillipsholmes.wikispaces.com/Happy Birthday Phillips!
