I don't have many magazines about musicals in the 1950's, I think is the final one so I thought it would share it even though High Society isn't one of my favourites. Magazine Article: vintage-gold.livejournal.com/3807.html

High Society was a musical re-make of The Philadelphia Story. I like the Cole Porter music, but I'm not fond of the casting (which is ironic given the fact that Grace Kelly and her family were famous members of Phila. High Society). I love the original film. It was amazingly close to the play version--just a few changes for the sake of censorship.

I love the original and agree that the casting was not great. Crosby was too old for the role and despite his many comedic roles, I don't he was ever that great at it. Grace Kelly may have just won her Oscar but she is no Katherine Hepburn. I do think Sinatra could actually act, but he is no match for James Stewart's "intellectual snob". I do like some of the music, Celeste Holm isn't that bad and I could listen to Louis Armstrong all day. The Philadelphia Story is a well written, fast paced, sparkling comedy classic and High Society is a rather slow, rehash with songs.
It's one of those remakes, where everyone seems to be too aware of the original... if that makes sense.

He was just treading water when Hope wasn't around. Both he and Sinatra turned out to be fine dramatic actors. You can probably tell I'm not a big fan of High Society. (Except in how it influenced the title of High Anxiety, but only the title. Brooks' film was a spoof of Hitchcock, pure and simple.) I do like looking at Grace Kelly, however.
