My thoughts are with anyone who is caught up in this storm. I am keeping my fingers crossed that you all come out the other side unscathed. From over here, it looks like the authorities are well prepared and I hope this helps in minimalizing any potential damage.

I'm staying indoors today and hoping the power doesn't go out. Luckily, we're about 60 miles from the ocean, so the damage here won't be as bad as on the Jersey shore. Keeping my fingers crossed along with you.

Thanks, Violet. So far, so good. I live in a good old sturdy South Philadelphia row house (like Rocky), so we've weathered the storm pretty well up to now. I think the worst is over for us. The poor people on the coast got battered and there's a lot of flooding in low-lying areas. The winds are supposed to be very strong for a couple more days, but I think I'll venture out of my Hobbit hole tomorrow to assess the situation.

Hi Woofy, I sure hope you and your family are doing OK. The scenes on the TV are unbelievable. Be safe.

Hi Woofy, I sure hope you and your family are doing OK. The scenes on the TV are unbelievable. Be safe. Thank you. I was just on the phone with a friend in New York and they certainly got it a lot worse than we did. She lives in Queens, and all of the connections to Manhattan (where she works) are down. Here in Philly most of the damage was wind related rather than water related. When I see pictures of the damage along the New Jersey coastline, it's hard for me to believe it was the same storm. I guess you could say we Philadelphians dodged a bullet.

Way out of the way of the storm here in California, but I have family in Massachusetts. Hope they're okay.

Something like 90 people have died as a result of the storm. That's terrible, of course, but I think it could have been a lot worse. Probably a similar number perish during a typical Nor' Easter here.

Tuesday was okay, but by Wednesday, the storm had moved on to Canada. However, for my family in Massachusetts, things didn't go too well. Cousin and godfather lost power, but their families were the only two out of my family that lost power.

How they are treated and how long they last depend more on where a person lives than on the cause of the blackout. I live in a large city, so there are few trees to disrupt our power supply. I've lived in my present home for 53 years and I can only remember about a dozen or so power outages. And these lasted no more than a few hours. My ex, on the other hand, lives in suburban Philadelphia, and when her power goes out, it usually lasts for days (once for over two weeks!). I hope your family in MA don't have to put up with the shortages for too long.
