I found this on-line and thought to share. It may not be directly related to Dwight, but then again it may be too. There is a bit of information on different Fryes and where they migrated from and settled, as well as an image of a potential family crest. www.houseofnames.com/frye-family-crest

You know I've always wondered if Ella had Scottish blood, mainly because of her maiden name being Dodd.

I too have wondered about his heritage. It's said he spoke German, so my guess has always been that maybe Ella's mother was German and she knew German and taught Dwight. But Dodd I always thought was either Scottish or Welsh and I think Fry is Welshe, right?

I read it on-line ages ago, and I apologize but I cannot seem to locate the link. I will continue to search for it though and share it here if I do manage to find it again. Also, like Leah, I assumed that he was German because he spoke German and Fry(e) is considered a German name too. I could be wrong though, as this link seems to clearly indicate that he would be of English/Irish descent.

Beautiful crest . I thought Dwight was German and Scottish, I don't remember where I read that though.

I don't know if anyone ever saw this but in the official Dwight website from years ago, in the section about Laura (I think) they made reference to the fact she made the journey to Copenhagen with Buddy (while he was working on a show) and implied this was special and a big deal. I don't know if this was because she was travelling to Europe or that there was a Scandinavian connection. I mean parts of Denmark have been classified as Germany so could that be part of it?
It seems odd that of all languages Dwight could speak fluent German (unless he could speak other languages as well and it's never made refernence to). He also had the stereotypical Germanic looks of blonde hair, blue eyes but then so do I so that doesn't mean much.

I saw that reference too, Mrs. V., I wonder if Dwight was part Scandinavian?

I also think it's pretty wonderful that Dwight's name is listed on the crest's page .

It's quite possible he was all of the above, and then some. I'm an American mutt myself (Scottish, English, Welsh, Irish, German-Jewish and American Indian). And parts of Denmark were once considered Germany, right? it's possible his German heritage was also Danish.

Yes, I did see that at the old official site, but I always assumed that they said that it was special simply because it was her first time in Europe, but perhaps I am wrong and there was a greater significance to it. It is possible that he had multiple nationalities, but I do think that years ago people's nationalities were not as varied. You still had some first generations here in the U.S. so nationality seemed to be limited to one or two at most. I am "guessing" English/German for Dwight at this time, but again we can't be sure!

Also, there are a lot of German immigrants from Pennsylvania over through Indiana, and his dad was from Ohio originally, right? Maybe his dad was part German and taught him the language.
