This week, Citizen Kane was shifted off number one spot in the BFI's Greatest film list, after 50 years in this position. Hitchcock's Vertigo now tops the poll. I'm not a huge fan of poll's because favourites are entirely subjective and some things I'll agree with and some I won't. However I find this poll intriguing. I would consider myself a fan of Hitchcock, but I'm not sure about this decision especially as I honestly don't think Vertigo is even Hitchcock's best film. What does everyone else make of the list? www.bfi.org.uk/news/50-greatest-films-all-time

Vertigo is one of my favorite films of all time, but to imply that it is better than Citizen Kane is absurd. The only western that made it onto the list was The Searchers. That's a great John Ford movie, but it wasn't Ford's best by any means. And how did Mulholland Drive make the list? Probably thought it was good because they couldn't understand it. Oy veh! (And it came in ahead of City Lights? You've gotta be pullin' my leg!) The article says "846 critics, programmers, academics and distributors have voted"--I wonder how that 846 breaks down? 800 academics, 40 critics, 5 programmers and 1 distributor, more than likely.

When my SO told me about the list I was a little sad. I don't think Vertigo was Hitchcock's best film either and I certainly don't believe it comes close to Orson's masterpiece. And how did Mulholland Drive make the list? (And it came in ahead of City Lights? You've gotta be pullin' my leg!) Exactly! It's also ahead of Metropolis which I can't get over. There are many incredible films on the list but I was very surprised by some of the rankings.
