Sadly I couldn't get the whole documentary from youtube, but this is a condensed version with a few nice clips of Humphrey Bogart and Peter gets a brief mention.

Well done! Describing what comprises "film noir" usually results in violent arguments among film buffs. This documentary takes a safe middle path and succeeds because of it. For me, film noir is like pornography: I can't define it, but I know what it is when I see it.

It was a good documentary because it wasn't written by a professional film expert, but by Dr Matthew Seet who I think is actually culture historian. I wish the whole thing was available because it was quite good. I'll keep an eye for a repeat on BBC4.

(Studying social/cultural history will do that for you.)
