What a great thread! Some amazing femme fatales there. Double Idemnity and Scarlet Street are amongst my Mum's favourite films as she is a fan of Edward G. Robinson. Judith Anderson was a brilliant actress and someone not many people give full praise. Though she looks very distinctive, she bringsan almost chameleon quality to her work.
I've not seen Laura for ages, should try and watch it again. I also like Gene Tierney in Leave to Heaven. Scorcese apparently said that it was a film noir made in technicolour, but it has touch of melodrama in it as well.

Your mum has such great taste in films! I love strong leading ladies, it's one of the reasons I love noir so much. They usually get their comeuppance though. Sometimes I just can't handle the way women were portrayed in other films. All that crying, screaming, fainting... please. That's why I love actresses like Judith Anderson and Lauren Bacall so much. Gene Tierney is one of my all-time favourite actresses. She was so incredibly beautiful and an amazing actress. Leave her to heaven is one of my favourite performances of hers, that's such a great film. And as a lovely bonus, it's another film she made with Vincent Price. I know I'm getting off the subject of noir here but Heaven can wait is another wonderful film of hers. Laura is in my top three favourite films, it's pretty much perfect, I just adore it.

The Woman in the Window is another excellent film. NOt sure which I prefer this or Scarlett Street. I suppose the latter is more heartbreaking, I get frustrated and angry while watching it, so TWITW is an easier watch.

Another of Shipman's mini-biographies. The book is falling apart, as much I cringe at what he says, I feel I should save it in some way. He does have a habit of making unpleasant remarks about someone's appearance.

Thank you so much for posting this Gene Tierney bio. I didn't know Hedy Lamarr turned down the title role in Laura. I don't mean to sound unkind but I have to say I am glad because I just adored Gene in that role, she was perfection. I get so sad reading about her personal life, her struggle with depression and the tragic circumstances surrounding her daughter's health. She was a wonderful actress and so incredibly beautiful. Thank you for sharing this piece.
