Here are two pictures of the Astaire siblings from 1911. I think we tend to forget that by the time Fred made it into pictures, he and Adele had been performing on stage for over 30 years. It's no wonder Fred was the very best at what he did.

It must have been a shock to suddenly have been left without Adele as his partner, but despite Hollywood's initial doubt he really proved how great he was.

I have all the RKO FA/GR musicals on DVD. I have to say that my favorite is Swing Time although there are bits and pieces of Top Hat that I like. (I love No Strings.) Here's a picture of Fred and Adele with their mother Ann from 1926:
