I watched this documentary as part of the 1930's season on BBC4 and I enjoyed it. While there are a few complaints saying that it was not indepth enough, it was good enough for someone like me that just wanted to marvel at the beauty of the great old ships from the past.

This is a photo of the USS United States. It's docked just a few blocks from my house on the Delaware River. (It still holds the record for the fastest Atlantic crossing and it was used in the film The Last Voyage.) Somebody got the idea that the old ship could be turned into a casino and docked it in Philadelphia while awaiting gambling permits from Harrisburg (the state capital of Pennsylvania). Those permits never came and the USSUS sits as a rusting hulk on the river. A very sad fate for a fine old ocean liner....

It's so sad what happened to many of the old Liners. Turning them into a casino, usually seems to be the only suggestion and it's a pity.
I'm from Glasgow where ship building was the main industry and when that collapsed, it took along time for Glasgow to recover. Many would argue it never has recovered, but I think back to my childhood in the 80's and the city seemed like an awfully bleak, dejected place and I think it has improved a hell of a lot since then and some pride in the city has been restored.
I don't know if Violet looks at this thread, but I was wondering if she has visited any of the new Titanic exhibitions in Belfast. It's something I would like to go and see at some point.

Is Violet from Belfast? My mother's people are from Ulster (Ballymena, County Antrim -- Green though, not Orange.) My father's people are Prots from Cornwall (Redruth), so it all balances out.

Woofy, I grew up in county Down. My family is mostly based in London now though. My grandfather worked at Harland and Wolff. Mrs V, we are planning to visit the Titanic exhibition soon, we're looking forward to it. The area has been incredibly busy with tourists and children since it opened this year, the exhibition is very popular.

I envy your seeing the Titanic exhibition.

I hope to get over to Belfast to see the exhibition at some point in the future. I presume it's permanent and not just for this year.
