Well, as Conrad Veidt is the star of the month, I thought I would start a thread dedicated to The Cabinet Dr Caligari. It's such a fascinating and surprisingly modern film to watch. I'll not go on about the German Expressionism in this film, partially because I'm not knowledgeable enough to talk about that and also because it's the first thing most people mention that in reference to this film. Having said that, I have to say I am fascinated by the Arts Movement that established itself in Weimar Germany.

I understand the CV was a virulent anti-Nazi and that he devoted a great deal of time and money to the British was effort. Ironic that he played a Nazi in several films. Too bad he didn't live to see the Allied victory over Fascism.

I read that when he died at the tragically young age of 50, he left all his money to the British Government to fund the war effort. I also believe he was the highest paid actor to appear in Casablanca.
Another actor to appear in The Cabinet of Dr Caligari is Hans Heinrich von Twardowski, who played Alan. Twardowski also appeared in Casablanca, as well as Background to Danger and The Cross of Lorraine with Peter.
