I recently had the opportunity to see the first screening of the newly restored version of Hitchcock's The Lodger. The night was very exciting as the film was broadcast live across the UK. I love this film and the restoration by the BFI National Archive is absolutely beautiful. The new score, by Nitin Sawhney, is gorgeous and was performed live by the London Symphony Orchestra and the Nitin Sawhney Band. Nitin Sawhney's score is truly remarkable and his soundtrack includes a couple of songs, which was unexpected but they are lovely and work so well in the film. Before the film commenced we were treated to a montage of clips featuring some of Hitchcock's most popular films. After the film there was a Q & A session with Nitin Sawhney, which I thoroughly enjoyed watching. There was also a series of short interviews with musicians and directors, including the wonderful Martin Scorsese. There was a small technical problem during the film but the evening was very well planned and we had a fabulous time. Here is the BFI trailer featuring Nitin Sawhney's score - The restored version and soundtrack will be released in September and the DVD is currently available for preorder - www.amazon.co.uk/Lodger-2012-Soundtrack-CD-DVD/dp/B0086O7WUI/ref=sr_1_4?s=dvd&ie=UTF8&qid=1343681627&sr=1-4www.bfi.org.uk/hitchcock

Hitchcock made 28 of his 67 films in Britain before he moved to the US. Most Americans are familiar only with the films he made there between 1934 and 1930 (from The Man Who Knew Too Much to Jamaica Inn). I've seen a few of the others (including The Lodger) but I would love to see more of them.

I am so glad you got the opportunity to see this Violet. The score sounds good. There have been a few disasters when re-scoring for silents or even sound films (remember the unnecessary Phillip Glass score for Dracula). I shall definately get the DVD when it comes out. I hope it has the LSO performing.
It's such a clean print too. There arw so many nice shots in The Lodger, I like the POV shot of Novello pacing about in his room. He was a really big star in his day, and we tend to forget about him these days, apart from the Awards named after him and that a fictionalised version of himself appeared in Gosford Park.

I love the trailer . I have the dvd from MGM with two scores-Paul Zaza (1997), and Ashley Irwin (1999). It is an excellent film and I agree Mrs V., Ivor Novello was a fantastic actor.
