I don't know if everyone had seen this film but I thought I would start discussions on films that Dwight appeared in that are less well known than his iconic, Universal performances. Also known as a Handful of Clouds , the film was made in 1930 and featured Dwight as a ruthless gangster named Monk. The film was his first talkie and also featured James Cagney in his second film role.

Yes I have seen this film, and while Dwight's role is brief it was still memorable and he gave another excellent performance. What is interesting is that the trailer for the film features his character, Monk, delivering a bit of extra dialogue that must have been cut from the film. I would highly recommend this movie, not just for Dwight, but because it is an excellent piece of early cinema and a great example of the formation of the gangster genre.

As an interesting side note, Lew Ayres was initially offered the role of Harker in Universal's Dracula but he refused it, why??? Because he wanted to play Renfield but the studio refused as it was not the image they wanted for him.

Yes I had heard that and Lew was correct- Renfield was the better and more significant role.

This film is on my wish list, along with The Circus Queen Murder. I'm desperate to see both films in their entirety but can't find them anywhere! I'm crazy about the clips I've seen on YT.

That's a shame because I know both films were available in their entirety on youtube but that was a while back.
