In some respects this might sound as if I am being hard on Dwight... and I am not but it many fans here and elsewhere have said that Dwight was often the bst thing in many of the films he appeared in.
So fans , I have been wondering what do you consider to be the worst film that Dwight appeared in? This does not mean Dwight's worse performance at all, just the most cringe worthy production.
I always get the impression that in DFLL, Dead Men Walk is considered a dud and it was the one that I really avoided for a long time because I heard it was bad and also Dwight does look a bit ill in it but then when I did see it, I didn't think it was THAT bad, not great but not TRULY awful.
Then we have been discussing The Wayne Murder Case recently which is slow, dull, with archaic performances and a pretty bad conclusion where the sound was cut when the killer (I won't give anything away) meets his maker. Then there's the apparent comedy betrayal of the butler by the African American comedy actor Fred "Snowflake" Toones, which really doesn't sit well with a modern audience.
Sometimes I have my reservations about Dr Crespi, something I feel bad about because it was Dwight's highest billing in a movie and we should be grateful for that but when Dwight is not there, I can't help but cringe over the dialogue, the wobbly sets, much of the acting. Some of the dialogue I put down to the fact that as a modern audience, we are perhaps used to hearing certain medical rhetoric which an audience in 1937 were not familair with but then the two leading females are annoying, too many questions like why one moment is Dr Ross on the surgeons table awakening from his... sleep with Dwight and Guilfoyle looking very shocked, then he is suddenly wandering out the corridors of Taft Clinic scaring Miss Gordon (who after Dwight, I think gives the best performance) and don't get me strated on how STUPID, the alleged genius that is Dr Crespi is? It's no wonder that Von Stroheim briefly returned to Europe after this.
