This is great! I noticed that in the last census, California is listed as Dwight David's birthplace, even though he was born in Spokane.

BTW, my late father was also a native Washingtonian (Seattle).

Note that neither Dwight or Laura's middle names are listed. Does this mean that Buddy's name was actually Dwight David, rather than Dwight. I mean that the David wasn't really a middle name that D & L intended it to be a double barrelled name like John Ross or Mary Ellen (sorry about the 70's TV references). MM, do you remember one of the interviews with Buddy that Leah had? In that interview, Buddy stated that he was never known by or went by Dwight Frye Junior, he always used the David which makes me think this.

I do remember Leah having that, I just don't remember about the name. But I agree, maybe it was always meant to be Dwight David.

Lot's of places in your country do, not sure if I'll ever make it over there though Well, never is a long time. Maybe someday you'll come and visit us. When I was in college and grad school, I used to drive out to Colorado every summer to visit my brother. It's only when you drive that you come to realize how vast this country is. A lot of it is empty space, granted, but a lot of it is gorgeous beyond description. Denver is a mere 1750 miles from where I live. Seattle is well over 3000 miles. I've only been to WA once, back in 1981, but it is one of the most beautiful places I've been to. (I flew there, however. A 6000 mile round trip is pretty daunting, even for me.) I'm 57 now, so I don't have the wanderlust I had when I was younger. There are many places outside of this country that I want to visit before I kick the bucket. The Scottish countryside is one of those places. As often as I've been to England, I've never been to my ancestral homeland (Ireland), nor to Wales and Scotland. Shame on me! I've been to Russia, Germany and Finland, but I've never been to France, Italy or Spain. I'll have to fix that some day, hopefully before I'm even more decrepit than I am presently.

I wish I could see that interview again because I thought Dwight David resembled Dwight in it and there were a few things not mentioned elsewhere, like Buddy being told to eat his dinner etc. I distinctly remember that he never went by or was known by as Junior and got the impression it slightly annoyed him.

This is amazing, Mrs V! Great detective work, you always post such incredible finds! That's really interesting about Dwight David's name. Woofy, your country certainly is magnificent. I was lucky enough to visit Seattle a few years back and Washington is a lovely state. Oregon is also stunning and I just adore California. I haven't visited Russia but I have always longed to. It's absolutely true what you said about the sheer size of your beautiful country, it's so vast, and as a Brit travelling by road or rail in the US (and Canada), the size is quite overwhelming, especially in comparison to the UK.

Violet, California isn't that great. Go to New Hampshire (my home state), or Massachusetts (my second home state). Great places to be!

It's absolutely true what you said about the sheer size of your beautiful country, it's so vast, and as a Brit travelling by road or rail in the US (and Canada), the size is quite overwhelming, especially in comparison to the UK. I was last in Russia in May of 1991 (i.e. two months before the Revolution that toppled Communism). I'm sure a lot has changed in those 21 years. When I was in grad school, I worked as a liaison for the Russian community in Philadelphia, so I got to meet quite a few of them. I can tell you some stories that'll singe your hair, believe me. My late father came from Seattle. That was basically my reason for going out there, to visit family I don't ordinarily get to see. California is a beautiful state (and more than 10% of the US population lives there). San Francisco is my favorite place there, although there are parts of LA and Sand Diego that are very nice as well. But there are parts of LA and other large cities into which I would never venture. But I suppose that's true of any large city in any country. I would also like to brag about the beauty of my own state, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. (Penn's sylvan, or Penn's woods.) Most of my state is rolling countryside and magnificent to travel through. We have about 11 million people, but most of them live in the five largest cities. I have always lived in Philadelphia. It's a lovely city and very significant historically, but it has its problems too (as I mentioned above).

Woofy, how was your time in Finland? Which area did you visit? Finland is another place I would really love to see some day. Yes, I noticed the population density in California. My SO is Canadian, though he has lived in the UK with me for almost a decade, and it blows his mind that the population of California is greater than the population of his entire country! It is stunning, we've been there a few times, and San Francisco is my favourite place in the state too. We have so much fun there and it's home to my favourite restaurant. It's a garlic restaurant called The Stinking Rose with pictures of Bela Lugosi on the wall, amazing place. LA is a lot of fun and Santa Barbara is really gorgeous. Philadelphia looks like a beautiful and fascinating city with a very rich history. It's definitely a place I'd be interested in visiting some day. Sorry about all that but I love travelling and I love hearing other peoples stories.
