I have been a fan of Basil Gogos' work for many years and I am sure that he has many other fans on this wonderful board. For anyone who perhaps is not familiar with his name, you probably are already familiar with his work. Basil Gogos is an artist, best known for his incredible pieces which feature on the covers of the Famous Monsters of Filmland magazines. He painted the faces of Bela Lugosi, Boris Karloff, Vincent Price, Peter Cushing, Lon Chaney and many, many others.
Sara Karloff summed up Basil's work beautifully when she said,
"One does not just look at Basil Gogos' work, one is mesmerized by it. His choice of subject, his dynamic use of color, the energy and emotion which leap from his canvases capture the attention of even the most casual passerby. One need not be a fan of the genre to be enthralled by his genius. Basil Gogos has done more than any other artist to pay tribute to the Classic Horror characters and to the men who portrayed them. For this, their families and their fans are extremely grateful. Thank you, Basil...".
From Fritz Lang's masterpiece, Metropolis (1927)
Fred Gwynne as Herman Munster
This Famous Monsters cover features Peter Lorre as Dr. Gogol in Mad Love (1935). I always loved how the light reflects off the metal, it's amazing and according to Basil was achieved through use of the airbrush.
His art is not limited to movie monsters though. Basil created exquisite pencil and charcoal portraits of famous faces including Humphrey Bogart and Peter Cushing. Some of my favourite pieces are his wildlife paintings.
Basil's art can be found on the covers of albums by The Misfits and Rob Zombie. Oh... and ladies, a photo of Dwight as Karl can also be found on the back cover of Rob Zombie's album The Sinister urge .
There is a fabulous book called Famous Monster Movie Art of Basil Gogos and I highly recommend it if you are interested in learning more about Basil and his work. The book is available from Amazon. There is the most gorgeous quote in it by Basil about Boris Karloff. I treasure this book.
