This week I watched two new horror films for me. The first was the well promoted Hollywood horror Insidious, perhaps a more accurate name would be Insipid or Irksome or any other word beginning with I that means absolute crap. In case you haven't worked it out, I didn't like it probably because the script demands that I should care about a family of cardboard cut-out characters who seem to be in a scenario that we've seen in about a hundred other horror movies before. Generally this started off as a standard haunted house movie them moved onto being about out of body experiences, with a touch of Poltergeist here, a bit of Amityville Horror there, a sprinkle of A Nightmare on Elm Street resulting in a waste of a couple of hours, in my own opinion.
The other film I watched was Let the Right One In, a Swedish vampire film from 2008 and has recently been given a US remake called Let Me In (I haven't seen that one.) Despite my initial reservations about this film thinking "oh god, not another Vampire film dealing with teen angst" I actually liked it. It was eerily atmospheric, visually beautiful (loved the snow), it was creepy with good performances all round.
I've now come to the conclusion that Hollywood lost the ability to make decent horror years ago but the genre is blossoming in non- English speaking countries.
