It is possible that Dwight would have felt a sense of entitlement after his success on Broadway, but I am still not certain that he did. If he felt that way I think that he would have been complaining and making quite a scene concerning his roles (especially the smaller ones such as Wilmer Cook were dialogue was virtually non existent) a lot earlier than he was. Dwight D. stated that he didn't start to show real concern over type-casting in Hollywood until around 1932 if I remember correctly. I think that he would have showed his dissatisfaction earlier than this if he really felt entitled.
He did state early in his stage career that he would "wait until something better came along" when being offered a very unsubstantial role by a producer, but then at this point in time he was just starting out. He was very young, and that comment always struck me as one that was motivated by youth as opposed to entitlement. Especially considering the fact that at this point in time he was only beginning his career and did not have success anywhere yet to speak of. So to act entitled then would mean that he would have had to have a really huge ego, which I doubt he did because in later years he took whatever he could find. The love of acting meant more to him than his pride.

"The love of acting meant more to him than his pride."
Tis true, he just wanted to do what he loved.

I didn't mean to suggest he was making a scene or anything, just that maybe he made some comments without realizing how they may have sounded. I agree he was pretty much ego-less for the most part, but there had to be some moments of "What the hell is going on here?" coming from such success on Broadway. Sometimes in Hollywood all it takes is one comment (intentional or unintentional) overheard by the wrong person and you're screwed.
But I generally think it was mostly due to his acting method being more suited for the stage than the screen (but thank God he DID make some movies, because we now get to enjoy them over and over!) and just bad luck.

Yeah we kind of hijacked your question and turned it into something else...

Oh no, I know that you weren't suggesting that he had made a scene:) I just meant to say that I think he would have made a scene if he felt that entitled- which he didn't.
I agree that he might have said a comment somewhere that rubbed the powers that be the wrong way. It's true that all it takes is one simple remark and you're screwed. Hollywood was not forgiving at all, and with success on Broadway Dwight certainly would have had a right to wonder what on earth was taking place!

Or, maybe the career decline just boils down to one simple fact: Hollywood is stupid.

Hollywood is full of schmucks.
There, I said it, oh yes.

MM, you tell 'em!
I think the Oscars' next Lifetime Achievement thingy should be for Dwight. That is, once we whack those bozos in the head with a 2 x 4 yelling "DO YOU SEE THE LIGHT?" until they see the light.

While R. Lee Ermey stands in front of the HOLLYWOOD sign and yells,
"THIS TOWN IS FILLED WITH JACKWAGONS!"
LOL!
