Recently I was browsing online for Dwight info, as I often do when much to my surprise I stumbled across a link for Dwight's 1927 Broadway hit "The Devil In The Cheese" in which he appeared alongside Fredrick March and a certain Bela Lugosi. Much to my amazement I realised that the whole play was available to read online so I researched a little further and quickly discovered "A Man's Man", which I purchased and Mima. which I have also bought but hasn't arrived. I also believe The Plays the Thing is in the collection.
SO, I was wondering if anyone would be interested in reading these plays and as a group discussing them on the board. I have scanned A Man's Man and hopefully by lovely husband, will turn into an Adobe Reader file and when Mima arrives I'll do the same.
What I suggest is that each month, we read one of the plays and then over the month we can popst our thoughts and opinions on them. Please let me know if you want to be involved, either by replying to this message or PM-ing me. As the admin, I can contact you by email but if your account is unsuitable let me know.

Mrs. V you know that I definitely want in. I think that this is an AMAZING idea. Not only will we be learning about Dwight, we will be learning about culture and about Broadway when it was in my opinion, at it's very height. This is educational, informative, fun AND Dwight related. Who could ask for anything more:)

Well it looks like we have a nice little group gathered here:)
One question though, how will we exactly do this? I mean will we be reading a chapter (or in this case an act) a week and then come here to discuss it, or will we just take the whole month Mrs V. suggested to read the entire play and then come back here to talk about it? I guess it's a question of whether we want to finish it first before we discuss it, or whether we want to talk about it as we go along. Any preferences?

I'm happy that most members are interested in this idea. I'm thinking of also emailing other members who are not regulars to see if they are interested. Good question Luna. OK, I'm going to have to go all pretentious for a moment but as someone that studied theatre and scripts (I have an MPhil in Dramaturgy, not that it did me any good) but you really need to read a play in one sitting, it usually takes a couple of hours. Then immediately, write your thoughts on the piece in note form. If you are feeling particularly studious you can read it a second time, simulatenously taking notes. In the next week or so I'll post the necessary links, then everyone has a month to read the whole thing and after a month, I'll start a thread on the play of the month. That might be easiest way to do it.

"OK, I'm going to have to go all pretentious for a moment"....
*Grin* no problem Mrs. V. I just asked because I know that various different book clubs read a chapter a week, so I wanted to know if this would be similar or different. I know plays are usually shorter than most books, but I was still unsure how you wanted to do this. If it's best to read it all in one sitting then that is the way to go:)

Don't know who has read The Devil and the Cheese but those of you that are still wanting to do this, could they email or PM me when they are ready to read Man to Man so I can send you the file?

I am definitely still interested, although it has been kind of hectic for me over the past month and that is why I have been slow to get to this. But I do promise to have it tackled by the weekend at the latest. I'll post thoughts then and be ready for "A man's man".
