I watched The Vampire Bat this morning and date I say, i forgot how much I enjoyed Dwight's performance in the movie. ;D I absolutely adore Herman and am genuinely gutted when I see his demise. Outside his work in the Universal Horrors, Herman might be his best role, then again I'll watch something else and change my mind.
My only niggle is that I had to, once again, watch the cut version and really want the complete film that has the great Dane scene. Does anyone know which DVD release of the movie has that scene?

I purchased my copy at Amazon Mrs. V and it has a large portrait picture of Lionel Atwill's face on the cover with an orange swirling spiral design behind him. This is the full version, although the film quality on it is pretty poor.
This film is amazing to me, and Dwight's performance stands out the most of course. Melvyn Douglas is semi-annoying, as his character is so clueless (an officer of the law who instructs a group of raving villagers to find a criminal suspect- Herman- while he continues to sit on his duff!) Faye Wray wasn't too bad, and Atwill was fair, but Dwight just steals the entire film.

I loved Dwight as Herman too. He's just a sweetheart. What did you mean by the extended Great Dane scene? I watched Vampire Bat about a week ago and they showed him leaning over the lady and then the dog came out and scared him away. Was there more to this scene originally?

Dwight did a FABU job as Herman. So sweet and childlike, you just want to protect him from the ignorant villagers. I wonder if he based Herman's behavior on Buddy's ?

Limey- Your scene is the full scene. In the cut version the scene where Aunt Gussie attends to Herman's hand and then faints is completely taken out of the film.

Thanks Luna. limey: Because The Vampire Bat is often on a disc with another movie they have often decided to shave a few minutes off it and for some reason that is the scene is always taken out. I've only ever seenit on youtube. even if I download the film, that scene is missing- which is annoying because one minute Herman is happily eating an apple and the next the villagers are chasing him into a cave.

I agree Poor Herman but what I do find annoying is that no one seems to ever grieve for Herman or regret his death. No one ever seems to grieve the deaths of any of Dwight's charactres coming to think of it.

Very true! And even before..., I always felt Martin the warden in Seward´s asylum was lousy in his job - mocking poor Renfield like that. Of course, in real life it was even worse in those 1930´s institutions, but STILL! I must say that I have toyed with idea of fanfic set in Seward´s asylum... Sorry for going off-topic.

Hi Mina, I would love to read some fanfic also. I adore Renfield. I think he is my favorite Dwight portrayal. ;D
