I've seen the 1978 version with Donald Sutherland and Brooke Adams in it numerous times and I love it. Just the whole thing...the casting, the story, the pace of the movie, all of it. I knew it was a remake of the 1950's version and have wanted to see that one for a long time and I finally did the other day. I loved it!! If anything, especially given the time frame it was made in, I liked it a little more than the 70's version. At a time when everyone was tense about the Cold War and horror movies depicting giant irradiated insects or a man shrinking to nothing after going through a cloud of atomic dust were the order, this one went back to the menace of space, and how little we knew of what was out there. Kevin McCarthy is a favorite actor of mine, so from time I saw him cameo in the 70's version, I knew I had to see this one. The feeling of impending dread the movie is able to build along with growing paranoia McCarthy's character is going through is really terrifying. Even when you know what is happening, those feelings never let up.
I was late to seeing this one, lol. And others may be too, so I'll post a short trailer without giving anything away. But if you haven't seen it, you should, whether you like horror or not. It's a great movie.

I do like these film, though it is long time since I watched it. I have to say I think the Donald Sutherland version is excellent, one of the few remakes that surpass the original, in my opinion. I like the 1956 original, partially because it's not as hopeless as latter adaptations, shall we say.

Both are great to me. I like them both for different reasons, but Sutherland is fantastic in the remake.
